THORNTON WILDER’S THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH

Quintessence Theatre Group, Philadelphia’s home for classic repertory theatre, presents a full virtual production of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth, starring Tony Award winner Rachel Bay Jones and Leigha Kato.

JULY 19 - AUGUST 1 2021

George and Maggie Antrobus live a seemingly perfect life in suburban Excelsior, New Jersey with two beautiful children and a maid to attend to them day and night. Over 5,000 years of marriage, the family refuses to let small inconveniences - a fire, flood, the Ice Age, plague, a dozen wars, and as many depressions - get in the way of their survival or happiness. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1943, Thornton Wilder’s boundary-breaking allegorical comedy is a tribute to the disarming optimism, resilience, and indestructibility of the American spirit, while also confronting the paradoxical ideals on which our country was founded.

"To watch it as America emerges nervously from the pandemic cannot be other than tonic, and this exceptionally fine production is the right show for the right moment."

AMOS TAPPAN WILDER shares insights about the origins and history of The Skin of Our Teeth in response to Quintessence’s full virtual production of Thornton Wilder’s unique blending of farce, myth, tragedy and hijinks.

Tappan is Thornton Wilder's nephew and has served as his literary executor since 1995. Over the course of his tenure, Tappan has contributed to Wilder scholarship, including published notes with all of his uncle’s plays and novels. In addition to lecturing widely about Wilder, he has been responsible for encouraging subsidiary works based on his uncle’s majors works. Tappan is Honorary President of the Thornton Wilder Society. His contribution to his uncle’s legacy has ensured that all of Thornton Wilder’s novels and plays are in print and readily accessible.
